WTF are Hotrods?
Hotrods are like a cross between sticks and brushes. Bunches of wooden kebab skewers basically. They make a unique sound as the small sticks brush the drum heads, and make a splashy sound on cymbals.
A hotrod on a ride cymbal is a really lovely thing – percussive with a quick attack and yet ringing at the same time.
Dave Grohl is partly responsible for the popularity of hotrods. He used them on the classic MTV Nirvana Unplugged recordings. They helped him feel that he was playing with drumsticks, whilst keeping his playing volume down during the acoustic session.
The Kit
The Hotrods Kit sample pack was recorded using our trusty Yamaha 5000 kit, with a Tama maple snare and Zildjian cymbals:

- Tama maple 13″ snare with surface tambourine
- 14” A Custom Fast Crash, 18” A Custom Fast Crash, 22” K Dark Ride, 8” A Custom Splash
The Patches
We have created sampler patches that “map” the voices and velocities to different keyboard note events.
Simply load the correct format into your software sampler, and you can play beats using your keyboard, or programme beats in your sequencer.
We created sampler patches in the following formats:
