Oil up that fretboard with chicken grease, it’s time for a Prince drum groove…
For Free Beat Friday this month, we recorded a saucy Prince drum groove. A slamming 115bpm 4/4 groove with fills, congas and tambourine.
This Prince drum groove is inspired by the great, especially early, work of Prince – (as most things are around here!)
As we previously wrote about over here, Prince played his own drums on the early stuff. He was a phenomenal drummer with a crazy feel. Less laid back and groovy, more jerky and awkward – “uptight” is probably how we’d describe it.
We have a Song Slices pack with a very similar groove called “Butternut Funk“.
It’s recorded and produced with a tight, boxy sound and an uptight jerky feel. It comes with 12 arrangement sections, including intro, verses, choruses and breakdown/middle sections.
The Recording & Production
A solid 1-4-1 kick pattern holds it all together, but it’s the accents on the hats that makes it swing like a prince drum groove. Lob in a couple of saucy fills and sprinkle it with congas and tambourine and… well we reckon the great man would have approved.
With the FULL 16-channel setup, tom mics top and bottom, 3 room mics, there are plenty of production options here if you delve into the stems. It is played on our beloved DW Collectors series kit but with a Tama maple piccolo snare to give it that snap. And recorded, as always, in accordance with our Recording Ethos.
